The event runs from Friday through Sunday with a big catered dinner and a raffle on Sunday night. With six quality runs and eighty vehicles, there is still keen competition to get on specific runs on a given day. The event organizers have participants sign up each morning in a rotating order, based on their registration number, to ensure everyone has the best shot at their chosen trail for at least one day. The event has been based out of the same local campground each year and both attendees and owners have enjoyed the mutually beneficial arrangement. In fact, the whole town of Montrose gives great support to this event in the way of welcoming the four wheelers, providing goods and services to the event, and providing great prizes for the raffle.

By now you are probably asking if there is any down side to the Montrose Memorial Day Madness. Of course, there always has to be some negative aspect. In the case of the Madness, the drawback is that I only get to attend my favorite event once a year! The namesake obstacle on the Topless trail is now lacking the tree that gave it the name but the obstacle is still big, slick, tight, and bad!

The Cactus Ridge trail is supposed to be one of the "easier" runs at the Madness but the trail has gotten significantly more difficult with use. Large, slick, and mobile rocks make the initial sections of the trail very challenging.

The author's Scrambler working its way through the Topless trail. The extra wheelbase helped on the climbs but the full Scrambler overhang made negotiating some of the tight spots extra work.

Now who put that rock there? If you don't like to be high-centered or caught by your differentials, stay home or run some big rubber in Montrose.
