Craig Ross leads us out on the Topless trail on the first day in his immaculate and capable CJ5. Craig took every difficult line on the trail and is getting ready to send his vehicle through another major upgrade!

You always see a lot of truly pristine and even "pretty" vehicles at the Madness but don't let that fool into thinking they are a bunch of trailer queens! Attendance at the Madness requires acceptance of the possibility of rock rash on each and every trail. | It takes more than just great trails to make any event an essential on the "must-do" list. It takes great people and the Madness delivers. The Memorial Day Madness is hosted by the Western Slope Four Wheelers and a fine bunch they are! Club members are true enthusiasts who identified these great trail opportunities, worked with the local BLM office to open the canyons to vehicular traffic (NEVER an easy proposition!), and then sweated to make these extreme canyon routes marginally passable to people crazy enough to try them. They personally lead the groups, subjecting their own well-built vehicles to the same mineral jeopardies that imperil the Madness attendees. And they do it with high style, four wheeling abandon, and a great attitude!
Of course it matters little how genial the hosting club is if the masses attending are a bunch of whiny crybabies. Not an issue at the Madness! Since the very beginning, the hosts have made it clear that the event is geared toward the hard-core rockaholics and the result is as fine a gathering of dedicated rock fiends as you will find anywhere. A significant percentage of the attendees each year have been to the Madness before and the "regulars" help integrate the newcomers each year. The event is limited to only eighty vehicles which helps lend a friendly, "club gathering" aspect to the event. |
Who needs a lift in the garage when you run the Topless trail? In actuality, this was one of the many on-trail repairs carried out on Topless. |
